Thomas Bayrle and Alice Channer in conversation
Thursday 1 July 2010, 7pm

As part of the programme of events surrounding the exhibition ‘Unto This Last’, German artist Thomas Bayrle will be in conversation with London-based artist Alice Channer. Their discussion will revolve around topics addressed by the works in the exhibition, more particularly the relations between textile production and art. Channer, whose work is concerned with the politics of materiality, will speak about dematerialisation, flatness and the virtual, while Bayrle, who before becoming an artist trained in a weaving mill in the late fifties, will explain how the notion of ‘warp and weft’ has informed his trademark ‘superimages’. Though of different generations, both artists point out the parallels between textile and artistic production.
